Yahoo! Groups : HollandFreecycle

Welcome to HollandFreecycle—changing the world one gift at a time! We are here to serve Holland, MI and the surrounding areas.

We are an innovative grassroots project that harnesses the power of e-mail to connect people with things they want to throw away with others who would like to have those things. Any member of the community can post a note about an item they’d like to give away, or an item they are seeking. The one golden rule here: Every item posted must be free.

The Freecycle Network is open to all individuals who want to help keep usable items out of the landfill and get some great stuff in the process. Membership is, of course, free. Invite friends, family, local nonprofits and liberate a closet or garage near you!

Another great effort made possible by the Internet.  With over 700 messages and 681 members since starting on June 16 of this year, this looks to be an active group.

NPR did a report on this last month.  Sounded interesting but quite a lot of work.

We just gave away my son’s bike - we’d planned on replacing it next season as he’s outgrowing it.  Then he popped a tire, and cheap as bikes have gotten these days I didn’t even want to pay to replace the tire.

Posted a message to the Freecycle group.  Got an email from a lady.  Gave her our address. She came and got the bike.  I posted another message to the group saying the bike was gone.

Total time investment - 3 emails.  I couldnt load it into the car and get it to Goodwill that fast.

No more work than posting or responding to any want ad. The only added workload is a group moderator that approves the posts.
