“Experience is the name that everyone gives to his mistakes.” - Oscar Wilde
So I goofed. When I first started Boyink Interactive, I bought a Dell laptop and a Lexmark all-in-one type unit with scanner, copier, fax and printer. The Lexmark was nothing but trouble - every time I’d plug the laptop back in Windows would act like it had never seen it before, and I’d get to go through the install process all over again. I got rid of it after a couple months of that.
Then just the other day I noticed that some Lexmark-related executables were still showing in my Task Manager. It cheesed me off, since I had run the Lexmark uninstall process after getting rid of the printer. Software that can’t clean up after itself is a pet peeve of mine. So I went on a delete binge, searching both the file system and Windows Registry for anything that even *looked* like it might be Lexmark related.
Well, obviously something more critical to Windows looked Lexmark related, because when I was done I couldn’t print at all. Couldn’t even add a printer back again. And hadn’t made a backup of the Registry. This was bad! I was getting geared up to do a complete Windows reload when a buddy tipped me off to the System Restore in XP (found in Programs / Accessories / System Tools). I choose a date from a week ago and within an hour was back printing again - lucky too because it was time to cut invoices.
So thanks again to Sparky for the tip, and someday soon I’m going to look around XP a little harder to see what other goodies I’ve been missing.
