Well, in any case, after 145 years, Western Union finally decided its little telegram experiment was a dud. News.com Article >>
I read this with a little twinge of sadness - it seems the older I get the more I appreciate the products of simpler times.
The announcement on Western Union’s website is as terse as many of the messages sent over the last 145 years:
Effective January 27, 2006, Western Union will discontinue all Telegram and Commercial Messaging services. We regret any inconvenience this may cause you, and we thank you for your loyal patronage.
If you have any questions or concerns, please contact a customer service representative.
So, a moment of silence for a communication medium that helped build America, that delivered news of life-changing events, and was a forerunner of the work we’re doing today.
Stop.
