Cheap White Boards

People who meet with me find out one thing very soon—I like to draw.  If I’m in a meeting and there’s a whiteboard nearby, I’ll be going at it.  The results are never anything “artsy” (usually quite the opposite), but I find that even crude boxes, arrows, and “wireframes” help the discussion and decision making in a group setting.

I also like to use whiteboards while in the conceptual stages of planning a site.  Sometimes the best way to get a project moving is to get away from the keyboard.

I recently put a new office in the basement of our house, and wanted to get as much whiteboard space as possible.  But, being Dutch,  I didn’t want to pay what the “real” whiteboard companies want.

The solution was white “shower board” type paneling found at the local home improvement stores.  At about $9/sheet it was a good cheap solution.  I was able to get about 21’ x 7’ of it worked into the couch end of my office space:

But as this site indicates, the shower board isn’t a perfect solution.  Once anything written on the walls dries, it gets much harder to erase.  Different brands of markers seemed to have different results.

What’s working for me is the Expo2 brand of dry erase marker, and one of these Mr Clean Magic Erasers.

I have no idea if the eraser will eventually wear out the whiteboard, but the boards don’t see daily use either.

Finally - space to scribble on the walls!  ;)

Now the trick is finding an eraser that reaches the bottom corner so you don’t have to.
