An amusing thread going on over at Gadetopia offers a sobering look at many people’s (mis) understanding of the Internet.

What started as a comment on a news article covering the charitable giving of Bill Gates has turned into a hard-luck free-for-all, with posts from people apparently thinking that somehow Bill Gates is going to read this particular blog and respond with cash.

The appeals for money continue even after the author of the blog (and some other smart-alec poster) points out how silly this is.

    dear sir, i am in dire need for someone to help me with my dental bill. i am a full time worker but my medical will not pay for all my upcoming work.the total cost is $24,000.00 to dr. raskin. i am a financial service rep., because of the major work i will need i tend to not wanting to go places more often. please help. thank you
