Bad Form from State of Michigan

Dear Friend:

Thank you for taking time to sign our online petition to lower gas prices and make your voice heard.

A few weeks back I posted a link to a State of Michigan online petition to lower gas prices.

Setting the politics of the issue aside, the State is showing some bad form in it’s use of the Internet.

In order to submit that petition, I had to enter a valid email address.  That’s fine, but nowhere on the form was I given an option to opt-out of future communication concerning the issue.

Today I got an email from “Mass Mail” as a sender, with the subject of “Governors Message”.  Really makes you want to open it, no?

While the email does contain not so subtle “re-elect me” messaging that talks about issues totally unrelated to the cost of gas, what it doesn’t contain is an unsubscribe link, nor the physical address of the sender—two requirements set forth by the Can-Spam act of 2003.

While I’m not sure that law applies to political messages, this is all around a very poor showing of the use of technology from the State of Michigan.

And this from a Governor trying to attract high-tech

Yeaowch.
