Write

A Really Simple Content Solution?

Some publishers fear tipping their hand, that is, showing readers headlines and blurbs, will disincline people from clicking through to the site for the whole story—hence fewer eyeballs.

ClickZ checks in with an article about RSS - the syndication format of blogs and other software.  I had alternate reactions of chuckling and cringing while reading.  The above quote gave me a good chuckle - if publshers can’t write headlines and blurbs interesting enough to make RSS readers click through to the whole story, then they don’t deserve to be read.  And it probably means people aren’t reading them now.  Maybe marketers will finally find real metrics for their campaigns, not just meaningless “eyeballs”.

The cringe reaction came from talking about ads in RSS feeds.  I know eventually we’re going there…but I sure do enjoy the noise-free nature of RSS subscriptions, and will lament that when it’s gone.

I have been attempting to work with RSS feeds for awhile now—especially attempting to syndicate e-Church.com but it is not really simple, nor is actually using them. I find RSS feeds slow and pesky—a good idea in theory, I still have to see a benefit in reality.
