  1. On Using ExpressionEngine Add-ons
    March 13, 2011 in ExpressionEngine

The other day I posted the following on Twitter:

Continually frustrated that addons are the first suggestion for functionality that can often be pulled off with native code.

This tweet kicked off a busy discussion that really just proved (yet again) that, while Twitter can be a great tool for communicating sometimes, other times a quick tweet can just create a hotbed of misunderstanding.

  2. EECI and a Little Contest
    February 17, 2011 in ExpressionEngine

I’ve just booked my ticket for the ExpressionEngine / CodeIgniter Conference to be held in Brooklyn, NY next October.  The big puzzle for me, given our current mobile status is where I’ll be flying out of to get there.

So I’ll do a fun little giveaway.  For the next week leave a comment with the city/airport you think I’ll be flying out of.  If you turn out to be the first person who guesses right I’ll either send you a print version of my ExpressionEngine 2 Book, or donate the sales value to a charity of your choice.

Need some help?  Remember that we left in late September last year and review the map of our travels so far.

  3. ExpressionEngine Certification - an Update
    January 10, 2011 in ExpressionEngine

Last March I announced the beginnings of an ExpressionEngine certification program.  It’s been some time since that post I wanted to give an update of where that idea is (since the natives are getting restless (and rightfully so)...;)

The long and short of it is that, after researching what it would take to get a developer certification program in place, we just couldn’t make the financials make sense based on the current EE marketplace.  It turns out that it’s quite expensive (nearing 6 figures per test) to develop and deliver such a program while still retaining any degree of quality and reliability. There was just no way to do it that was affordable for the typical EE developer.

So, while the idea of developer certification is on hold, EllisLab and I are still in discussions about how to improve the experience around learning ExpressionEngine.  A “plan B”, as it were….stay tuned!

  4. Twitter Rules
    August 30, 2010 in Other

Not sure why I even feel like posting this - probably because I’m overwhelmed with things I should be doing so naturally want to do something I don’t have to.  At any rate, here are my rough self-guidelines for twitter usage.  No promises of success, no analytics tracking data to back them up.  Just what feels right.

    • No tweets about food. Yes, I just had an amazing meal but you weren’t there to share it so why rub it in?
    • No tweets about commercial air travel. It sucks for everyone - no sense confirming it. Updates via emails to MsBoyink are enough.
    • No tweets about workouts. Yes, I’ve gone for runs and long bike rides but do you really want to know every time I break a sweat?
    • No retweeting compliments from others. A simple thank you to the original tweeter is enough.
    • No “sharing” or “liking” from sources like YouTube or Pandora. If I really want you to see a certain video I’ll make more of an effort than clicking a button and sending a standard message to Twitter.
    • No Mac vs. PC crap.  I don’t say “buy a PC” when your Mac has issues, spare me the opposite when my system has trouble.
    • No following FourSquare or GoWalla users. If you value my attention so little that you’ll spend it just telling me where you are then you probably won’t miss me.
    • Attempt to be encouraging and positive, but not at the expense of honest reactions & feelings.
  5. Another Neighbor Disappears
    August 23, 2010 in Other

Within the past couple of weeks we noticed we had lost another long-term neighbor on our street, and it greatly saddens me.
