Volkswagen Jeeps from South Africa

Some interesting reader submissions for you today.  These photos come courtesy of Johan Wagner, manager of the AutoPavilion, VWSA Expo & Heritage Centre in South Africa.

Johan writes…

Original press pictures from Volkswagen of South Africa’s archives. VWSA build these vehicles under license because we had some spare capacity on our production lines. It was a fairly short contract, from 1975 to 1980 if memory serves. They were also sold through the VW Dealer network from the same show room floors as the VW products, something which would be unthinkable in today’s brand conscious marketing environment.

I’m curious what details other sharp-eyed Jeep fans will see on these Jeeps (click the photos for larger versions).

Wow, thanks to Johan Wagner for sending these in and Mike for hosting them, great pictures to see. I have been keeping my eye out for other South African VW Jeep material. Some of their distinguishing details are mentioned in the article I sent in on CJ6’s in South Africa, but I am sure there are more. Most of the VW assembled Jeeps I run into here in SA have been altered over the years so have lost some of the unique details.

I remember seeing these pics in magazines when I was a kid! Probably what started me off on Jeeps and I just had to have one! What I find most interesting is the bottom pic - This is clearly a 1975 or earlier CJ5, built by Motor Assemblies (Toyota) in Durban, South Africa! Note the external wiper motor. The registration number (CCN prefix) is for Uitenhage where the VW plant is situated and the same as the CJ5,6 & 7 in the top picture. Johan, did VW inherit this older CJ5 from Toyota?
