Steering Column Bushing

Here’s a great example of why I like Jeep people.  A few weeks back I posted a spare wheel on a local Jeep board, and it was picked up by another Jeeper named Harry Schrot here in town.  He mentioned that he was a toolmaker and if I ever needed anything….

A couple weeks later I realized the bushing setup at the bottom of my steering column wasn’t that great - it had a worn plastic insert inside what looked to be the original bushing.  Not good.  Worse - this is a part you can’t just buy at the local Jeep parts supplier.

Fellow EarlyCJ5.com member Mike “McRuff” Ruffin, also a machinist had posted this CAD drawing of the bushings he makes:

I sent the CAD drawing to Harry, and he was more than willing to make up the bushing for me.  True to Jeeper form, he even picked up my column and shaft just to make sure it would all be perfect—wouldn’t take any money for it when he was done.  To clinch the deal he left behind some Lock-Tite for installing the bushing.

Thanks to both Harry and Mike for helping a Jeeper out…
