Rear Diamond Plate Corners

These are the Off Your Rockers rear diamond plate corners that I had on Dutch.  They’re actually part of the gas tank installation since the filler neck needs to mount in the passenger side corner.

Once installed I’ll paint them white to match.

Here’s the passenger side with the tailight, backup light, and gas fill mounted

Taillight Installation
Re-mounting the corners from Dutch wasn’t entirely straightforward as the tailight holes ended up 1/2” off.  I enlarged both tailight holes in opposite directions to get them even:

The left corner doesn’t look perfectly straight either, but that should be less noticeable once everything is white again.

Trimmed for Flares
I trimmed the corners back from the wheelwell opening to allow space for the fender flares to sit flush to the body.  I didn’t do this on Dutch, and the flares always looked tweaked where they had to bridge the gap from the body to the thicker corners.

Paint Prep

I hate diamond plate.

I don’t want to add up the hours it took to get these corners prepped for paint.  I started with “aircraft remover”.  So far so good, the red paint loosened up nicely.  Still spent a couple hours scraping though.

Under the red paint was powdercoat.  Really good powder coat.  At first it looked like it withstood the aircraft remover.  Then just as I thought I was done and ready for primer, the powdercoat bubbled.  It didn’t loosen up enough come off easily, just bubbled enough to ensure I had to find a way to get it off.

Another night soaking in aircraft remover helped some - but not enough.  The solution was a heavy duty braided wirewheel on the angle grinder and another couple hours of touching every.  single.  diamond.

One done, one after the second round of aircraft remover.

Both Corners now primed:

And painted to match / installed:

I have not visited your site for a little while.  The changes look great!!  One question, I had bookmarked your write up of installing a rear gas tank in the rear of your CJ6.  But it seems to have moved.  Can you please let me know where I can look at the write up and pics again.  Is it on your new site?

Thanks, I just hope my CJ6 will look half as ggod as your when I’m done.
