Craig Evins from Texas sent me some pics of his super-sweet ‘56 CJ6.  Jim Allen, take note - here’s a CJ6 to feature in your next book…

Craig writes:

I finally stopped spending money on the jeep long enough to purchase a digital camera. Just as a refresher this is a 1956 CJ6 that I purchased on August 3, 2004. 

It had been stored in a barn for several years and did not run. The tub was beat up but had no rust. All the original interor was gone and numerous drill holes and self tapping screws were scattered throughout the jeep. 

I knew immediately after seeing it that I wanted to put it back to its original glory.  With the help of all my Jeepin buddies we began work on it. As you know its hard to find a starting point, so it ended up going to the frame and we began there.

The original axles,transmission and transfer case had to all be rebuilt. We took the F-Head motor apart and to our suprise had been rebuilt so we installed all new gaskets and put it back together.  Everthing else was individually sanded,primed and painted and then reinstalled.

So anyways there is no end to a Jeep but hopefully I can take it to a few old car shows and have some fun with it.

   I have recently bought a ‘70 cj6 and can’t seem to find many parts to restore it to original. The only thing saveable is the frame and dash panel.From there pretty much everything else is scrap.So if anyone has info on replacement tubs i would appreciate hearing from you.Excellent job on your build with this one

   You can get fiberglass CJ6 tubs through JCWhitney, or steel tubs through just about any Vintage Jeep parts dealer.

   I was just at WillysOverland in Toledo last week and looked over a CJ6 Replitub.

   What else do you need?  Other than frame and tub it’s all CJ5….

   Looks really great. I am also in the process of re-building a 56 CJ-6 in central Texas. The before pictures look similar to mine when I started (green under gray primer), except my tub had far worse floors. I recently found a replacement tub for a CJ-6 in New Braunfels, Texas in great shape. I picked it up to replace my tub.

   The Jeep looks really good, gives me hope on my project which is proceeding very slowly.

   If anyone needs a replacement CJ-6 frame with axles, there is one in great shape at the salvage yard I got my tub at in New Braunfels, Texas. The guy is very reasonable on prices.

   The 6 looks really sharp.  I bought a ‘74 CJ6 about three years ago and started the restoration this past winter.  I should be finished within the next few weeks.  I built mine to become a daily (yes, really) driver.  I figure you only live once, why not spend your travel time in a rare classic?  I have installed a 4.0 litr from a ‘99 Cherokee- everything bolts right together with ease.  I installed ‘95 wiring and controller off of a Grand Cherokee for reliability.  I have a dual heating unit for those colder winter days- one in front and one in the rear.  Plumbing thanks to a 2005 Chrysler Town and Country.  I work for a Jeep dealership, so parts are plentiful.  To look at this Jeep, you would never know it is not a fully restored original, aside from the engine upgrade.  I went with Torch Red (GM) and black interior.  I love the sixes for their on raod handling over the CJ5.  I also drive a 1983 CJ7 in the summertime.  Now my wife wnats one built for her…..never really ends, does it?  I have restored four 7’s and this 6.  Anyway, my point was to mention what a great job you and your pals did on this Jeep.  Turns heads all day, I bet.

    I would like to get in touch with Craig Evins from Texas, I have a 1956 CJ6 and I would also like to restore it, I’m not finding much in the way of any info for this year and model. I love the way his looks, I can only hope to someday see mine somewhat close to his. Good Job.

    I also have started a CJ6 restoration not sure yet what year, serial # 8405 28778 lookin to install a small block chevy auto trans. and transfere case out of a 82 chevy pickup I here its possible would appreciate any info. Also who makes a soft top for the 6?

    Softop Info

    On your swap - there are lots of variables - anything is possible but might also require changing the axles, depending on how the Chevy tcase drops.  More common is to keep the Jeep D18 and run an adapter.
